Your Spring Lawn Care Checklist for Inland Northwest Yards

After a long Spokane winter, your lawn needs the right start to thrive through summer. Rush it or skip steps and you'll fight weeds and thin spots all season. Here's the spring checklist we follow across the Inland Northwest.
Clean Up First
Once the snow is gone and the ground firms up, rake out leaves, dead grass, and winter debris. This lets air and light reach the crown of the grass and reveals any bare or damaged spots that need attention.
Don't Rush Onto Wet Soil
Spokane soils stay soggy in early spring. Walking or mowing on saturated ground compacts it and damages tender grass. Wait until the lawn has dried out and firmed up before you do any heavy work.
Sharpen the Mower and Cut High
A sharp blade cuts cleanly instead of tearing; a dull one invites disease. For our cool-season grasses, mow on the higher side — taller grass shades the soil, holds moisture, and crowds out weeds.
Address Weeds Early
Early spring is the window for a pre-emergent to stop crabgrass and other annual weeds before they germinate. Timing matters — too late and the weeds are already up.
Feed the Roots
A balanced spring feeding gives the lawn the nutrients it needs to green up and build a strong root system before summer heat arrives. Don't overdo the nitrogen, which pushes soft top growth at the expense of roots.
Tune Up the Irrigation
Before the dry season hits, have your irrigation system checked, adjusted, and any winter-damaged heads replaced so you're watering evenly and efficiently when summer comes.
